Excellent Company leads to Masterful Encounters on Steve Wilson's latest release, ' Enduring Sonance' | New Day New Play

Whether it’s alto or soprano saxophone, or flute, Steve Wilson holds high regard in our music. Lending his creativity to the bands of Dave Holland, Chick Corea’s Origin, Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, or the large ensembles of Maria Schneider and Gerald Wilson, or accompanying singers Dianne Reeves or Kevin Mahogany, Wilson’s playing always takes the creative process to the next level.

Enduring Sonance, Wilson’s new release from Smoke Sessions Records, shows him in the excellent company of Renee Rosnes on piano & Fender Rhodes, vibraphonist Joe Locke, bassist Jay Anderson, drummer Kendrick Scott, and special guest Kevin Newton on French horn. There are masterful encounters on works from pianists Billy Childs, George Cabes and Eliane Elias, a wonderful interpretation of a Michel Legrand classic, some Quincy Jones, some Milton Nascimento and more.
NEA Jazzmaster Willard Jenkins, who did the liner notes, calls the overall spirit of this record “warm and toasty”.

Hear for yourself the indelible compositions Steve Wilson has cherished over the course of his musical life, April 29 - May 3, when the band performs live at Smoke in New York City.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
