At WBGO we like to say, "All the world's a stage for the music we play."
Sometimes that music is closer to home than you might imagine.
With "Gullah Roots", trumpeter Etienne Charles shares a feel for the music of the Gullah-Geechie communities of coastal South Carolina and Georgia, a musical tradition originated among descendants of enslaved Africans in the Lowcountry region of the U.S., and popularized by the Roots group Ranky Tanky.
Etienne's creativity has consistently shown the connections between indigenous peoples and their musical roots, from his own island roots in Trinidad, to Creole music, and now the Gullah musical inspiration. With Etienne on trumpet, canon, Djembe, tambourine & congas, this Gullah music takes root, with the nucleus of alto saxophonist Godwin Louis, guitarist Alex Wintz, pianist Christian Sands, bassist Russell Hall, drummer Harvel Nakundi, alongside a legion of special guest instrumentalists and vocalists who bring this connection to life.
