Jazz is an art form in and of the moment. Pianist/composer
Mathis Picard made a major pivot in the Yamaha Studio
on September 10th, when at the 11th hour, an evening of
vocal/piano duets, became a solo piano recital.
To say that Mathis rose to the occasion is an understatement:
what transpired was stunning and truly inspirational.
Picard’s unique artistic voice (he recently signed to Yamaha)
merges his diverse musical & cultural backgrounds: originally
from France & Madagascar, now based in New York City.

Picard is an ASCAP Next Generation of Songwriters recipient,
a member of the Montreux Jazz Foundation, and a Juilliard
School Alumni under the mentorship of Kenny Barron.
Picard runs The Sound Orchestra, his large-scale ensemble,
whose debut genre-bending EP World Unity came out in 2020.
His first solo piano album, Live at the Museum, in 2022.

Hosted by WBGO’s own Lezlie Harrison (Come Sunday
& Singers Unlimited), Mathis’s mesmerizing compositions
and unique piano stylings, transported the audience to a
truly magical place.
