Steve Turre: The unifying force of music

Steve Turre
Steve Turre

Trombonist and shellist Steve Turre has recorded or toured with the highest of creative spirits—Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Woody Shaw and Max Roach, and that’s the short list. With Sanyas, his new recording captured live at Smoke in New York City, Steve took to the stage with a group he didn’t want the audience to forget: pianist Isaiah J. Thompson, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxophonist Ron Blake, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White. The result, a fascinating expression of originals and standards, with the leader’s trombone (featuring both Harmon and plunger mutes) and shells engage his master bandmates in musical conversation, undeniably hip. Turre and the group will celebrate Sanyas live at Smoke in New York City, June 27-30.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
