Charles McPherson’s album ‘Reverence’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play May 13-17

To alto saxophonist Charles McPherson, Reverence simply means deep respect and admiration, which for him on this new recording is directed toward legendary pianist Barry Harris, who early on, mentored the saxophonist during his early years in Detroit. Captured during a live date at Smoke in NYC, Charles is joined by trumpeter Terell Stafford, pianist Jeb Patton, bassist David Wong and drummer Billy Drummond, in a program of originals, a nod to Arlen & Mercer and McPherson's "Ode to Barry."

From Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17, one cut from Charles McPherson’s album Reverence will be featured each morning in the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
