Rachel Z’s album ‘Sensual’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play This Week

Rachel Z
John Abbott
Rachel Z

You've heard a couple of tracks prior to its release. Rachel Z is worth that and more. I first heard her in the band Steps Ahead. I met her father at a Peter Gabriel concert at The Meadowlands. She's worked with Stanley Clarke, Al Di Meola and Regina Carter. She recorded and toured with Wayne Shorter, who wrote a tune for her. For many years she has made music on and off the stage with her husband, the legendary drummer Omar Hakim. Sensual is a reflection of her experience, and her present state of sharing her joy in the pleasurable pursuit of her art. With Rachel's piano & electronica, Omar's fascinating rhythms, Mino Cinelu's percussion, and the bass lines of Tony Levin, Matt Penman and Jonathan Toscano, you share her reflections through her wonderful expressions.

From Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10, one cut from Rachel Z’s album Sensual will be featured each morning in the New Day, New Play spotlight in the 8AM hour on my Daybreak show now airing 8AM - Noon.

Preview “Inamorata” from Rachel Z’s album Sensual, above.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
