Monty Alexander’s album ‘D-Day’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play April 15-19

Monty Alexander
Monty Alexander

Pianist Monty Alexander's parents named him after British general, Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery. Monty was born on June 6, 1944, as General Montgomery, under the direction of Dwight Eisenhower, was guiding the troops onto the shores of Normandy. As Monty approaches his 80th year, he shares some particular moments in his life, in a trio setting with bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Jason Brown. There's a nod to longtime friend Frank Sinatra, a Charlie Chaplin nugget, alongside originals inspired by conflict, peace and restoration, always sparked with the intoxicating beat of reggae and his contagious spirit of swing.

From Monday, April 15 through Friday, April 19, one cut from Monty Alexander’s album D-Day will be featured each morning in the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
