Joel Ross’s album ‘Nublues’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play February 26-March 1

For Nublues, vibraphonist Joel Ross wanted to get deep into the blues, accessing beyond the 12-bar scheme, to a more spiritual place. With saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist Jeremy Corren, bassist Kanoa Mendenhall, drummer Jeremy Dutton and flutist Gabrielle Garo, the group synergy takes them off script, through originals and originality on works by John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk on Ross’s fourth effort for the Blue Note label.

From Monday, February 26 through Friday, March 1, one cut from Joel Ross’s album Nublues will be featured each morning in the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
