‘Bernstein in Vienna’ by Peter Erskine & the Jam Music Lab All-Stars featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play January 22-26

Peter Erskine
Peter Erskine

Leonard Bernstein created with a palette with colors from jazz, blues and popular music, shaping a classical sound that attracted fans from around the world. The Vienna-based Jam Music Lab All-Stars, under the direction of pianist Danny Grissett, and special guest, drummer Peter Erskine, saluted Bernstein in performance, captured here. It's a new Bernstein shine, with the collective working through "Somewhere," "Lonely Town," "Cool" and more, gloriously demonstrating that significant music creation is a continuum to be enjoyed many times over by the creators at hand.

From Monday, January 22 through Friday, January 26, one cut from the Bernstein in Vienna album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
