To conjure the immense musical spirit of Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner is a daunting task for most, impossible for some. But for bassist Gerald Cannon, who worked with McCoy for 14 years, and Elvin for nine years, it's a task in the right hands. The leader also hand-picked a collective of true heavyweights to realize his intentions: Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, alto saxophonist Sherman Irby, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Dave Kikoski and drummer Lenny White. Together, this ensemble, captured live at Dizzy's Club in New York, soars with both electricity and a quiet hush, through a program of Elvin and McCoy nuggets. This Cannon does justice to two titans of the jazz canon.
From Monday, January 8 through Friday, January 12, one cut from the Live at Dizzy’s Club: The Music of Elvin & McCoy album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.
