Johnathan Blake’s album ‘Passage’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play Sep. 18-22

As the son of renowned violinist John Blake, Jr., drummer Johnathan Blake has always possessed a musical and creative integrity that has found its way to the bands of Ravi Coltrane, Chris Potter, Maria Schneider, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Kenny Barron and countless others, which glowingly attests to his rhythmic nature.

With his new recording, Passage, Jonathan places himself in the company of vibraphonist Joel Ross, saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist David Virelles and bassist Dezron Douglas for a collection of band originals, and a salute to drummer Ralph Peterson.

From Monday, September 18 through Friday, September 22, one cut from the Passage album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
