The group and the album are The Heavy Hitters, a collaboration of six of New York City's top players—Mike LeDonne on piano, Eric Alexander on tenor sax, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Vincent Herring on alto sax, Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums. There are no sidemen here. Think of it as a well-played all-star game, if the all-stars really got to know each other's moves. Captured at Van Gelder's studio, there's a definite flavor of those captivating Blue Note recordings of the ‘60s, but the relevance is definitely today because it's happening today.
Move your head. Tap your feet. Miss your exit. Blame The Heavy Hitters.
From Monday, February 6 through Friday, February 10, one cut from The Heavy Hitters album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.
