The Dave Stryker Trio’s album “Prime” featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play Jan. 23-27

Guitarist Dave Stryker's Trio, with organist Jared Gold and drummer McClenty Hunter, has been making music together for 15 years. Prime represents their first ever trio recording, after noted outings with the "Eight Track" series, a tribute to former employer Stanley Turrentine, and most recently "As We Are," a captivating encounter with strings. Here, the threesome revisits Dave's days with "Brother" Jack McDuff, a nod to drummer Hunter, a gorgeous treatment of "I Should Care" and inspiration found during lockdown. Much of the music here delighted legends of fans during the trio's past summer long opening for Steely Dan.

A group in its prime? See and hear for yourself on February 4 when they play the Shanghai in Madison, N.J.

From Monday, Jan. 23 through Friday, Jan. 27, one cut from Prime album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
