Pianist-composer Jason Moran has formed many relationships with visual artists over the last two decades, from Joan Jonas to Adrian Piper to Glenn Ligon. He’s now joining their ranks with a solo exhibition at The Whitney Museum of American Art.
Jason Moran, as the show is simply titled, opened today and will run through Jan. 5, 2020. Earlier this week, Nate Chinen spoke with Moran and curator Danielle Edwards for WBGO News.
Chinen also reviewed the exhibition, noting that “in addition to consolidating a large swath of Moran’s interdisciplinary work, the show highlights how his jazz skillset — not just with improvising, but also with nuances of alchemy and flow and surprise — have opened new possibilities for the artists in his orbit.”
In addition to the sculptural pieces, drawings and video works in the show, Jason Moran will feature a performance series, “Jazz on a High Floor in the Afternoon.” It kicks off next Friday, Sept. 27, with a rare performance by saxophonist Archie Shepp.
