Pianist Sullivan Fortner Follows Grammy Triumph with Bold Sonic Exploration on 'Leave That In There' | New Day New Play

Pianist Sullivan Fortner first felt music playing organ at age seven in a Baptist Church in New Orleans, where he was born. With a pedigree from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Sullivan would work with Stefon Harris, spend considerable time with Roy Hargrove, among countless others, and release a number of recordings under his own name, with Grammy Awards and honors, including the American Piano Awards Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz.

Leave That in There is Sullivan's follow-up to his Grammy winning Southern Nights release in 2025, and continue his exploration on piano, keyboards, and various electronic instruments with infectious appeal.

Alongside Tyrone Allen II on bass, Kayvon Gordon on drums, and Jack Deboe on percussion, Sullivan continues a musical identity that is solely his own, delighting listeners with rich creativity at every turn.

Hear a track from Sullivan Fortner's Leave That in There each weekday morning @ 8:20AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO!

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
