NYO Jazz, led by Sean Jones, kicks off an album-release tour from home base at Carnegie Hall

As a performer, trumpeter Sean Jones has played with Frank Foster, Tia Fuller, Gerald Wilson, Joe Lovano, Jon Faddis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. As an educator he’s just as impressive, teaching at Oberlin Conservatory, the Berklee College of Music, Duquesne University and The Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

These credentials make Jones the perfect fit as Artistic Director of NYO Jazz, a big band ensemble based at Carnegie Hall, made up of top student players from across the country. Recently I chatted with Jones, baritone saxophonist Noa Zebley and guitarist Maurice Chaukor about their new recording We’re Still Here, and a nationwide tour that kicks off July 28 at Carnegie Hall.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
