Remnants of Tropical Storm Ida and at least one confirmed tornado pounded New Jersey and has resulted in injuries, structural damage, power outages and major flooding.
National Weather Service officials say a post office roof collapsed, injuring seven, as torrential rain and strong winds battered New Jersey this evening.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were inside the building or how severe the injuries were.
Several roads in the area experienced significant flooding. Major flooding has been reported in Newark, Bloomfield, Clifton, Cranford and other parts of the state, some requiring water rescues.
NJ Advance Media reports homes in Mullica Hill were severely damaged. Homes on Joanne Court were reportedly ripped apart, with one house’s entire side taken by the storm.
Harrison Township Mayor Lou Manzo said in an alert to residents that the tornado touched down around 6:20 p.m.
Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency and is urging people to stay off the roads.
Several local meteorologists have reported unprecedented rainfall totals that have led massive flooding throughout the Garden State.
