Acclaimed jazz guitarists Peter Bernstein & Paul Bollenback bring their formidable quartet to Zinc jazz club on Monday, June 13. They are supported by bassist Jason Clotter and drummer Joe Farnsworth.

Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. During that time he has participated in numerous recordings and performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released nine albums and a DVD. As a sideman, Peter has appeared in groups led by Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, George Coleman, Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Fathead Newman, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cobb, and many more. Current projects include his album, Monk, with Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart, a recently released solo record, Solo Guitar—Live at Smalls, and the highly acclaimed organ trio with organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart.

Paul Bollenback, a thinking person’s jazz guitarist with a clean ‘n’ fat tone and a barrel full of chops, has been impressing listeners as a sideman and, increasingly, as a leader in recent years. But inquisitive minds want to know: Is he mainstream? Left-of-mainstream? Or a work-in-progress? Probably all of the above. Bollenback has been heard alongside saxophonists Gary Thomas, Gary Bartz, and especially as a commanding, critical 1/3 of Joey DeFrancesco’s organ trio.

Queens Jazz Orchestra (QJO) returns live on stage at Flushing Town Hall, with a special tribute program "Bird Flight" honoring Phil Schaap and the genius of Charlie Parker. QJO will be led and conducted by Grammy-award nominated jazz artist and an original member of the QJO, Antonio Hart who was selected by the late NEA Jazz Master and former QJO Music Director, Jimmy Heath. Phil Schaap (1951-2021) was a radio broadcaster, record producer, educator, and historian whose knowledge of jazz was legendary in its breadth and detail. Schaap who lived in Hollis, Queens, was best known as the host of Bird Flight, a radio show on WKCR that's devoted to Charlie Parker. Schaap received six Grammy Awards over the course of his career. Charlie Parker Jr. (1920-1955), nicknamed "Bird" or "Yardbird", was an American jazz saxophonist, band leader and composer. During his short life, Parker changed the course of music. Like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Parker was a pioneering composer and improviser who ushered in a new era of jazz and influenced subsequent generations of musicians, writers and artists. This concert will present some of the seminal work of Charlie Parker and some special music composed by NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath. There will be special commentary from the colleagues of Phil Schaap as well.

Flavio Silva is a musician who is part of a new generation of Brazilian composers and instrumentalists that has been breaking through the music scene of different places, such as Brazil, The Netherlands, and most recently, New York. The guitarist studied with some of the best musicians in Brazil and all over the world, such as Michel Leme, Alexandre Mihanovich, Djalma Lima, Lage Lund, Adam Rogers, and Ed Verhoeff, among others.

Flavio has shared the stage with some highly skilled musicians such as Antonio Hart, Bruce Williams, Seamus Blake, Victor Wooten, Jamal Thomas, Ben Williams, Elijah Jamal Balbed, Munir Hossn, Cuca Teixeira, Sandro Haick, Thiago Espirito Santo, among others. Flavio also performed in some of the best festivals in Europe including the North Sea Jazz Festival(The Netherlands), Langnau Jazz Nights(Switzerland), Koektebel Jazz Party(Ukraine), Gronau Jazz Festival(Germany), and Delft Jazz Festival(The Netherlands).

In 2019, together with Pat Bianchi(Organ), E.J. Strickland(drums), and Corey Wallace (trombone), Flavio started a new project, playing original compositions and arrangements by all the members of the group, mixing the jazz tradition with other cultures such as Brazilian, African, and Fusion.

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur returns to Zinc on Monday, November 14. He’s supported by bassist Harvie S and drummer Sylvia Cuenca.

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator. He is renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism, and ability to charm peers, students, and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the flame alive and pure, burning in every note… He’s a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Roni — born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, based in the New York City area — has recorded dozen-plus albums as leader or co-leader, with The New York Times praising his “crisp, fluid style” and Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” He has developed a rare facility in both straight-ahead jazz and samba/bossa-nova styles, underscored by his work with masters in each field, from bebop piano sage Barry Harris and winds ace Frank Wess to beloved Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade and composer Marcos Valle.

Acclaimed Venezuelan jazz pianist Silvano Monasterios brings his trio to the Zinc Bar for a splendid evening of jazz piano.

Pianist-composer Silvano Monasterios was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He spent his formative years of training at the Jose Angel Lamas Conservatory while he alternately encountered the great American jazz tradition in all its diversity. He promptly began his professional career at the age of 18, combining these influences by performing and recording with some of the most prominent Venezuelan artists of the time.

In 1989, Silvano traveled to Miami, Florida, to participate in the Miami Jazz Festival, where he received a “Best Soloist Award.” By 1990, he had immigrated to the United States to make use of a scholarship from Miami-Dade College. More recognition followed with another “Outstanding Soloist Award” at the University of Colorado in 1991 and then a music scholarship from the University of Miami, from which he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1995. In 1998, Silvano was voted “New Artist of the Year” at the Hennessey Cognac Jazz Search in New York City, which led to a slot at the Playboy Jazz Festival where he engendered many new friends and fans. This year also marked the release of his first CD, “Roads Not Taken”, prompting more critical interest in the U.S. and Latin America.
