  • WBGO announcers take over Take Five with a dozen favorite holiday tracks, spanning jazz, blues and soul.
  • The Watchung Arts Center invites everyone to come and experience an uplifting musical night capturing the joy and love of the holiday season. Enjoy some holiday cheer by Amani on Saturday, December 11 at 8 PM. Amani was formed to share the concept of peace through music, performing for people of all ages, races, and religious affiliations. Amani performs hits from a variety of genres including The Great American Songbook, Gospel, R&B, jazz, Bossa nova, and Broadway. This performance, of course, will include a selection of holiday favorites. The members of the group are veteran musicians led by Marty Eigen on woodwinds, vocalist Stephen Fuller, pianist Fred Fischer, bassist Gene Perla, Gordon Lane on drums and Bill Ash on Trumpet. This will be the 18th Annual Holiday visit to the WAC by Eigen, who has been a frequent contributor to the Center’s “JaZZ in the Gallery” series, with his Beacon Hill Jazz Band as well as with other noted jazz performers.

  • Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project

    Saturday, 5/21/22 , 8 pm


    The VJC’s artistic director, Eugene Uman (piano,composition) presents the culmination of a year’s worth of composing and collaborating.

    Listeners can expect a “convergence” of the music he loves, including references to Colombian rhythms, swinging jazz and funk.

    This year features Michael Zsoldos (saxophone), Jeff Galindo (trombone), & the group’s original rhythm section: Stomu Takeishi (bass) and Satoshi Takeishi (drums).


    This year each concert has an in-person audience & a livestream component. You may purchase in-person tickets above &/or donate to the livestream. Please give generously and support live music.

    Tickets are $20-40 sliding scale.

  • Michael Bourne, who died on August 21, 2022, was a presence on the air at WBGO between the end of 1984 and the start of 2022 when he retired from full-time hosting duty. He is the host of the Singers Unlimited Podcast by WBGO Studios. Previously, he hosted the popular Singers Unlimited (1985-2022). He also hosted the equally popular Blues Break for several years. Michael is a senior contributor to Down Beat, with the magazine since 1969. Doctor Bourne earned a PhD in Theatre from Indiana University -- which comes in handy when he's a theatre critic for the WBGO Journal.

    Akinmusire is a multiyear winner of Downbeat’s critics’ choice awards for Trumpeter of the Year (including 2021) and Jazz Artist of the Year.

    A visionary artist with six albums as a leader, he is a first call sideman found on recordings with Joni Mitchell, Brad Mehldau, Kendrick Lamar and many others.

    Ambrose Akinmusire is a truth-teller whose music is an expression of his personal journey as a Black man. Although he loves playing jazz standards, he has chosen to compose original music that draws attention to the realities of racism.

    The list of his accolades include Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition Winner, Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Solo Competition Winner; Downbeat Critics Poll: Jazz Artist of the Year, Best Trumpet (numerous times); Jazz Times Critic’s Poll: Trumpeter of the Year (3 times), Artist of the Year, Record of the Year; New York Times Best Jazz Album of the year (2011), Jazz Journalist Association Trumpeter of the Year and others too numerous to mention.

    His discography includes 6 albums as a leader and sideman work with Kendrick Lamar, Joni Mitchell, Joel Ross, Brad Mehldau, Marcus Miller, Trilok Gurtu, the Yellow Jackets, Jack DeJohnette, Archie Shepp,Terri Lyne Carrington, Roy Hargrove, Mimi Jones, Esperanza Spalding,Tom Harrell and many others.

    Akinmusire is one of the most acclaimed jazz artists of his generation, a trumpeter of deep expressive resources and a composer of kaleidoscopic vision. —NPR
