Strata-East: The Legacy Begins Documentary

Black entrepreneurship. Artistic freedom. Cultural expression.

Since 1971, these touchstones have defined Strata-East Records. Founded by musicians Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell through grassroots efforts and visionary intent, the independent jazz label became a home for music that was unapologetically Black, joyful, spiritual, political, and free.

STRATA-EAST: THE LEGACY BEGINS is a one-hour radio documentary that celebrates the profound cultural and artistic legacy of Strata-East Records, delving into its founding, influence, and future. Through rich interviews, curated music selections, and historical context, the special traces the label’s evolution from its groundbreaking inception in the 1970s to its resurgence through a brand new partnership with Mack Avenue Music Group.
