The Music City program of the University of Orange, Orange, NJ, is celebrating its 7th annual Music City Festival on May 10-12, 2024, with rain dates the following weekend, May 17-19, 2024. Our Music City Festival highlights the music that is made by musicians in Orange and the surrounding areas. The music festival features many genres of music, including Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop, Classical, Gospel, High School Marching band, and school dance ensembles. All events are free of charge and open to the public. Below is some information on the University of Orange from our website: universityoforange.org:

The University of Orange is a free school of restoration urbanism in Orange, NJ founded in 2008 and building on a 64-year history of progressive organizing in the city. We build collective capacity for our friends, neighbors, and partners to cultivate a just and equitable city. We offer free courses, work in local coalitions to promote education across the lifecycle, and advocate for equity in urban planning. We hold at once the recognition that racist and classist policies continue to shape cities everywhere, and that the resources we need to heal already exist within our neighborhoods. We solve the problems of our world by learning to see the richness of our cities, becoming lifelong learners, participating in civic life, and having fun with our neighbors.

“[Paul Bollenback] is soulful, sophisticated and spiritual…” —JazzTimes

Acclaimed jazz guitarists Vinny Valentino & Paul Bollenback bring their formidable group to Zinc on Monday, October 10. They’re supported by bassist John Benitez and drummer Steve Smith.

Versatile is an understatement when describing guitarist and composer Vinny Valentino. Playing guitar since age six, this native Virginian began touring in a progressive rock band while still in high school. At age 16, influenced by the music of George Benson, Vinny began pursuing Jazz as a career. He recalls, “The turning point for me was hearing George Benson in concert; I had never heard anybody play like that. It was an eye-opening experience.”

Vinny has shared the stage with such jazz greats as Steve Smith, Tom Coster, Russell Ferrante, Tom Scott, Gary Bartz, Victor Bailey, John Benitez, Peter Erskine, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Randy Brecker, George Benson, Steve Gadd, Chick Corea, Dennis Chambers, Bill Evans, and Jimmy McGriff.

Paul Bollenback, a thinking person’s jazz guitarist with a clean ‘n’ fat tone and a barrel full of chops, has been impressing listeners as a sideman and, increasingly, as a leader in recent years. But inquisitive minds want to know: Is he mainstream? Left-of-mainstream? Or a work-in-progress? Probably all of the above. Bollenback has been heard alongside saxophonists Gary Thomas, Gary Bartz, and especially as a commanding, critical 1/3 of Joey DeFrancesco’s organ trio.

Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $25 in advance / $30 day of show. For more info, visit https://www.zincjazz.com.

  • “The brilliant playing of David Kikoski just smokes. His playing is sparkling.” —Chick Corea

“The emergence of Chris Potter as one of the most dynamic young players in jazz has been fascinating to behold.” —Chicago Tribune

Acclaimed jazz pianist David Kikoski brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano ft. saxophonist Chris Potter on Tuesday, July 26. They're supported by Joe Martin on bass and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums.

David Kikoski is one of New York’s busiest pianists. It’s no wonder. Given his swinging, always spontaneous playing, one immediately understands why his bio includes tenures with Roy Haynes, Bob Berg, Pat Metheny, and the Mingus Big Band.

A world-class soloist, accomplished composer, and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Down Beat called him “One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet” while Jazz Times identified him as “a figure of international renown.” Jazz sax elder statesman Dave Liebman called him simply, “one of the best musicians around,” a sentiment shared by the readers of Down Beat in voting him second only to tenor sax great Sonny Rollins in the magazine’s 2008 Readers Poll. He has performed or recorded with many of the leading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown, and many others.

Showtimes are at 7:00 PM and 8:30 pm. Tickets: $30 advance / $35 day of show. For more info, call (212) 477-9462 or visit http://zincjazzcom.

  • 5BMF’s 15th Anniversary season continues with a special co-production with THE MUSE: a thrilling double feature of Elliot Cole and Fiona Gillespie’s new folk-rock cantata Tam Lin and a new choreography of Stravinsky’s The Firebird by ABCirque and Next Realm Productions. Tam Lin is a modern adaptation of a famed 18th-century Scottish ballad and fairy tale – a story of transformation and love – set here as a musical drama weaving traditional Celtic, medieval, and modern musical styles and instruments. Performed by the new all-star ensemble Makaris – comprised of members of ensembles including ACRONYM, Alkemie, the Chivalrous Crickets, and Oracle Hysterical – Tam Lin‘s story is set on All Hallow’s Eve, making a most serendipitous premiere on October 31st! The concert will also celebrate the album release of Makaris’ new recording of Tam Lin. Part two of the double bill is a new adaptation for dancers and acrobats of Stravinsky’s The Firebird, presented under the Creative Direction of Cynthia Dragoni (Next Realm Productions) and the Cirque Direction of Angela Buccinni Butch (The Muse Brooklyn / ABCirque). The Firebird tells the story of Prince Ivan, who spares the life of the titular creature while hunting in the forest, then receives her aid in vanquishing the evil Koschei the Immortal. These two stories, of mythical creatures and of the struggles to lift curses, couldn’t be a more perfect pairing on a Hallowe’en afternoon, in a presentation designed to be friendly for families and for all those with a still-keen sense of wonder. Program: ELLIOT COLE, FIONA GILLESPIE: Tam Lin STRAVINSKY: Firebird Performance venue is a large warehouse, approximately 2.5 storeys tall with two large garage doors that will be kept open for the duration of the performances for improved air flow. Weather permitting, the Tam Lin portion of the program will be performed in The Muse’s outdoor courtyard. The Muse requires proof of vaccination for all ticket holders.
