About The Vision Festival

Founded in 1996, the Vision Festival is New York City's longest continuously running jazz festival. Now in its 26th year, this festival of music, dance, poetry, and visual art is heralded as “one of New York’s most essential art events” (New York Times). Performances feature legendary and emerging stars representing the free jazz, experimental, and avant-garde communities and include Lifetime Achievement honorees like Amina Claudine Myers, Andrew Cyrille, Dave Burrell, Peter Brötzmann, and Milford Graves. On Saturday, May 7, the Brook Arts Center welcomes back - Comedian Mike Marino, who is affectionately known to millions of his fans worldwide as New Jersey’s Bad Boy. Marino has a tongue like a razor and a heart of gold. He has performed in every major comedy club, theatre, casino, and event center from New York to Los Angeles and around the world. His stand-up material ranges from cutting-edge observations of everyday life to his Italian family roots; which recently spun into a T.V. pilot called “Re-Constructing Jersey”. His comedic style has landed him guest appearances on The Tonight Show as a regular sketch player, The Martin Short Show, Canada’s Comedy TV, The Boomer Show, Wild Pitch, and Hand Held Comedy Radio. A clip of Mike’s appearance on Byran Allen’s Comics Unleashed earned him over 7 million views (and counting), which has led to his current web series “Marino 2016” – an original comedy based on Mike’s road to the White House and wise guy attempt to become the first Italian American President of the United States. Abdullah Ibrahim is South Africa’s most distinguished pianist and a world-respected master musician.

Born in Cape Town, Dollar Brand, as he became known, was exposed to a melting pot of cultural influences: African traditional music, Christian hymns, gospel tunes and spirituals, as well as American jazz, township and classical music. Out of this blend of the secular and religious, the traditional and the modern, Abdullah Ibrahim’s distinctive sound and musical vocabulary was born.

His grandmother arranged for him to have piano lessons at the age of six. She was also a founding member of the AME church, a branch of the original church in Philadelphia, USA. His mother was the church pianist and played piano for silent movies at the local cinema.

The restrictions of access to the learning establishment forced the young knowledge seeker and budding composer to spend hours and days at Cape Town libraries reading and studying all inclusive works of global masters in culture, music, philosophy and world history.

The central project of MasterVoices’ 2020-2021 season is a virtual rollout of award-winning composer Adam Guettel’s theatrical song cycle, Myths and Hymns, in an online staging conceived by Ted Sperling. Inspired by Greek myths and a 19th-Century Presbyterian hymnal, the 1998 cycle is a kaleidoscopic collection of musical genres as it explores the nature of faith and longing in a secular world. New short musical films illustrate the protagonist’s attempt to seek answers in four ways – through Flight, Work, Love, and Faith. The four chapters of this personal voyage will be released in free digital installments throughout the winter and spring – Flight (January 13), Work (February 24), Love (April 14), and Faith (May 26). All installments will remain available after their premieres for on-demand streaming on MasterVoices YouTube channel  until June 30, 2021. Star artists include Anderson & Roe, Yazmany Arboleda, Julia Bullock, Sammi Cannold, Cloud Chatanda, Lear deBessonet, Khristian Dentley, Renée Fleming, Annie Golden, Joshua Henry, Capathia Jenkins, Steven Kellogg, Mykal Kilgore, Norm Lewis, Jose Llana, Lucy Mackinnon, Danny Mefford, Kelli O’Hara, Elizabeth Stanley, Take 6, Ted Sperling, The MasterVoices Chorus, and more. The first chapter, FLIGHT, explores the possibility of finding fulfillment by rising up or away. After a jaunty prologue (“Prometheus”), Guettel frames the myth of Icarus as the story of a young man striving to get out from under his famous father’s shadow and shine like the sun. After his crash, the solace and hope of Migratory V expresses the human aspiration to fly together and soar above the troubles below. The retelling of Pegasus explores the fall of the hero Bellerophon when he angers Zeus. The chapter ends with the cycle’s first hymn text, Jesus the Mighty Conqueror, with its refrain consisting of the single word, “rise,” repeated over and over.

Tony, Drama Desk and Grammy nominated singer and actor Max von Essen is featured in an intimate New York Pops Underground cabaret performance at Feinstein’s/54 Below on Monday, October 4, 2021. The event begins with a champagne reception at 5:30pm followed by the performance at 6:30pm, accompanied by a three-course dinner with wine pairings. The New York Pops Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke hosts the evening, which is The New York Pops’ first in-person event since February 2020. Max’s performance celebrates his love of the golden age of Broadway and the American Songbook, and includes “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific, “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, a Gershwin medley, and other selections. Proceeds from The New York Pops Underground cabaret fundraiser support PopsEd programs, which provide music education, arts access, and performance opportunities for New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds. The event also celebrates Executive Director Anne Swanson’s 20th anniversary at The New York Pops, as well as the orchestra's forthcoming return to Carnegie Hall.
