Echo Taunt is the hybrid electronic project of musicians Michael Alfieri and Walsh Kunkel. The duo is marking their beginnings with the release of Sudsville on the Shiny Boy Press Record Label and with live improvisatory performances. Guitarist Walsh Kunkel and drummer Michael Alfieri play in a free jazz tradition with intensely superb musicianship; crafting an immersive dimension of sound art environments. Check them out on Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp and other streaming services. Walsh Kunkel is a guitarist, composer and electronic musician hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. Walsh has spent his youth organizing and experimenting with sound and song form, writing and producing tracks of an array of styles. These abilities and interests have been augmented by the Jazz Performance program at Towson University where he studied with the likes of Anthony Pirog, Kris Davis, Drew Gress, William Parker and many more. With a focus on combining electronic and acoustic music styles, Walsh Kunkel is forging his own sound and searching for ways to express his views of the world through his work. Mike Alfieri is a drummer, percussionist and composer from New York now living in Baltimore, Maryland. Mike is a frequent collaborator and session drummer - writing, recording, and producing with Tomato Flower, Freaks No Geeks, Kinsmen & Strangers and other projects. He has worked with renowned jazz artists including John Riley, Dan Weiss, John Abercrombie, Pete Malinverni, Ralph Lalama, Richie Morales, and Tom Rainey. He’s played festivals, galleries, theaters, DIY spaces and independent venues all around the US and abroad including Brooklyn Bowl, The Ottobar, Rockwood Music Hall, Weinberg Center for the Arts, Cornelia St. Cafe, Merriman’s Playhouse, and The Count Basie Theater. Mike earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase. George Cables Trio Saturday, March 12, 2022 8 pm at the Vermont Jazz Center George Cables is a true jazz master, revered by aficionados and peers alike for his inventive harmonic concepts and beautiful, lyrical style. He will be performing in a trio setting at the jazz center with Essiet Essiet on acoustic bass and Jerome Jennings on drums. Cables was born in New York City in 1944, and was initially a classically trained pianist. He attended the High School of Performing Arts and then went on to study at Mannes College of Music. As a young man he was drawn to jazz and began studying and playing gigs around New York at the Top of the Gate, Slugs, and other venues. During that time, he toured and recorded with the legendary drummer Max Roach. His piano can be heard on Roach’s seminal album, Lift Every Voice and Sing. In 1969, Cables was the pianist for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for a short time and then went on to tour with tenor titan Sonny Rollins.  Rollins took Cables to the West Coast where he took up residency. Collaborations and recordings by Mr. Cables include work with tenor saxophonists Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. The longest standing relationship Cables developed was with alto saxophonist Art Pepper.  Cables became Pepper’s pianist of choice, so much so that Pepper gave him the moniker “Mr. Beautiful.” Cables has recorded almost 40 albums as a leader and upwards of 200 albums as a sideman with some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time, including Freddie Hubbard, Art Pepper, Dexter Gordon, Bobby Hutcherson, Frank Morgan, Max Roach, Gary Bartz, Bud Shank, Phil Woods,Woody Shaw, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson, Von Freeman, Sonny Rollins,David “Fathead” Newman et al. This concert will have both a limited in-person audience & a livestream component. Join award-winning pianist and composer Charu Suri, who became the first Indian jazz artist to premiere an evening of work at Carnegie Hall, in an evening of her music that draws from her native Indian rhythms and ragas (modal scales), in an enthralling, energetic and soulful musical experience unlike anything you’ve heard, with glorious Sufi singing on top of it all.

Praised by GRAMMY winners and a winner of several awards for her work, Suri’s ensemble pulls you deep into the heart and soul of the East while pushing the boundaries of a jazz trio. Lyrics or ghazals sung by Falsa, and percussion by Jesse Gerbasi.

Pianist and composer Charu Suri treads fearlessly between genres, pulling global influences that range from the mood-anchoring Indian ragas, Sufi music, to the trio. Her ground-breaking albums, The Book of Ragas, and its sequel, The Book of Ragas vol. 2 have often elicited the response, "I've never heard this type of sound before."

One of the few female composers from India to perform work at Carnegie Hall, Charu has lived in four continents, and writes music that reflect her journey as both a traveler and her training as a classical music piano prodigy. She has been playing the piano since the age of five, and performing since the age of nine, and one of her best memories is winning an international piano competition at the age of 15.

What started purely as an experiment with her "Book of Ragas" has turned into a niche that she is now increasingly becoming known for.

In her latest "Book of Ragas vol. 2," which was highlighted by Jazz at Lincoln Center as an August new release, Suri uses her native Carnatic and Hindustani ragas (modal scales) as the basis for lyrical and energetic piano improvisations, layered by Sufi singing. All About Jazz has praised her for creating a new sound, and her raga compositions have garnered her an Hollywood Music in Media nomination, an International Singer Songwriters Association gold record, and Global Music Awards as well as praise from fellow GRAMMY voting members.

But she is no stranger to the art of the Songbook too (attribute this to her listening to numerous records of Bill Evans and Billie Holiday as a kid). "The New American Songbook" has garnered many awards, including a "Band Single of the Year" crystal trophy for her song, Bluesy, awarded by the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) in 2021.

Charu has performed at Lincoln Center and other prestigious concert halls around the world, including St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She often performs with her band, and sometimes as a soloist.

The British band hasn't had a chart-topping album in a decade, but it pulled out all the stops to promote its latest, Moon Music, including selling more than a dozen different versions of the album.
