  • Beloved Brooklyn venue Barbès returns to presenting live music after NYC’s COVID-19 pause with a brand new livestream series. Télé-Barbès is broadcast live from Barbès legendary backroom, several nights a week.

“Live is dead but we’re trying our best to clone it,” says Barbès owner Olivier Conan. “For the past 18 years, against all reasonable odds, we have managed to present close to 1,000 shows a year. For the past three and half months, Barbès has been silent, but we’re doing our very best to adapt and not become a casualty.

“We’re trying to recreate the live experience as much as possible - with quality sound, and cameras that don’t imitate parking garage surveillance cameras. We find the experience uplifting, because it is the closest to live music we’ve come to in months.

“Our livestreams are under an hour, generally streamed at 6.00 pm. They favor listening music rather that party music, for obvious reasons. We’re minimizing the use of horns or multiple vocals: So no choirs, no brass bands, no opera. No very large bands - that means no Slavic Soul Party, no Bulla en el Barrio or some of the other extraordinary bands who have come to define our space.”

Still, many old favorites -- including Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet, Stephane Wrembel Trio, and The Crooked Trio -- have already returned for the Télé-Barbès series, with more to come; taking Barbès back to its roots as an incubator of original Brooklyn music and talent.

For the full schedule of Télé-Barbès upcoming performances, and to watch them live, check the Barbès website: https://www.barbesbrooklyn.com. Every performances is archived at the above address, and on Youtube, as well. All performances are free to watch, but a tip-jar link is included for donations to pay the musicians.

In addition to the Télé-Barbès series, last August's successful Barbès In The Woods event will also return, in a slightly-tweaked livestream format for 2020. Tune in on Saturday, August 8th for House Parties for Barbès, a very special Zoom party to keep spirits high and keep the lights on at the iconic Brooklyn bar. Featuring DJ sets from Nickodemus and Eric Banta from Names You Can Trust and performances from Son Rompe Pera and Underground System.

  • It’s no surprise Sarah Brightman is the biggest selling soprano in the world. Her crystalline voice is immediately recognizable across the globe: earthy yet ethereal, haunting yet angelic. Since her international breakthrough as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, Sarah has toured extensively to widespread acclaim. She is credited with pioneering the classical crossover movement and is the only artist to have simultaneously topped the Billboard dance and classical charts. Don’t miss the awe-inspiring vocals of this luminous superstar.
  • The central project of MasterVoices’ 2020-2021 season is a virtual rollout of award-winning composer Adam Guettel’s theatrical song cycle, Myths and Hymns, in an online staging conceived by Ted Sperling. Inspired by Greek myths and a 19th-Century Presbyterian hymnal, the 1998 cycle is a kaleidoscopic collection of musical genres as it explores the nature of faith and longing in a secular world. New short musical films illustrate the protagonist’s attempt to seek answers in four ways – through Flight, Work, Love, and Faith. The four chapters of this personal voyage will be released in free digital installments throughout the winter and spring – Flight (January 13), Work (February 24), Love (April 14), and Faith (May 26). All installments will remain available after their premieres for on-demand streaming on MasterVoices YouTube channel  until June 30, 2021. Star artists include Anderson & Roe, Yazmany Arboleda, Julia Bullock, Sammi Cannold, Cloud Chatanda, Lear deBessonet, Khristian Dentley, Renée Fleming, Annie Golden, Joshua Henry, Capathia Jenkins, Steven Kellogg, Mykal Kilgore, Norm Lewis, Jose Llana, Lucy Mackinnon, Danny Mefford, Kelli O’Hara, Elizabeth Stanley, Take 6, Ted Sperling, The MasterVoices Chorus, and more. The first chapter, FLIGHT, explores the possibility of finding fulfillment by rising up or away. After a jaunty prologue (“Prometheus”), Guettel frames the myth of Icarus as the story of a young man striving to get out from under his famous father’s shadow and shine like the sun. After his crash, the solace and hope of Migratory V expresses the human aspiration to fly together and soar above the troubles below. The retelling of Pegasus explores the fall of the hero Bellerophon when he angers Zeus. The chapter ends with the cycle’s first hymn text, Jesus the Mighty Conqueror, with its refrain consisting of the single word, “rise,” repeated over and over.

  • “Dominic Smith & The B.A.D. Trio - A Tribute To Wynton Kelly” Dominic Smith, drums Bob Butta, piano Amy Shook, bass Join us for a tribute to one of the all-time greats: Jazz Pianist Wynton Kelly, who was famous for his tenure in the Miles Davis Quintet as well as for his own trio which he led through the 60’s. This trio with bassist Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb was captured on many classic recordings with Wes Montgomery, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson and many others, some of which were recorded at the Famous Ballroom here in Baltimore organized by the Left Bank Jazz Society. Pianist Bob Butta has been an in-demand sideman, soloist and accompanist on the D.C./Baltimore jazz scene for many years and is always guaranteed to swing hard and take no prisoners. Bob is a “jazz musician’s musician” having absorbed the history of Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Bill Evans, Cedar Walton, and Thelonious Monk among others. Bob has worked with Sonny Fortune, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Curtis Fuller, Gary Bartz, Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, Clifford Jordan, Buster Williams, Eddie Daniels, Stanley Turrentine, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Woody Shaw, Johnny Coles and Wallace Roney as well as countless local musicians. Bassist Amy Shook is one of the most in-demand acoustic bassists in the mid-Atlantic, coveted for her huge sound and infectious, driving groove. In addition to being a premier performing and recording artist, a multi-instrumentalist (acoustic bass, electric bass, violin, viola, and cello), she is an accomplished composer, and her personality truly comes through in her writing. Amy co-leads the all-women powerhouse trio the 3D Jazz Trio (3Divas), with drummer Sherrie Maricle and pianist Jackie Warren and also the Shook/Russo 4tet, a band she started in 2004 with her husband, tenor saxophonist Pat Shook, and drummer Frank Russo. For more info on Amy, check out www.amyshook.com Drummer Dominic Smith has been a fixture on the jazz scene for more than 30 years, playing with the cream of the crop of local players as well as visiting musicians from New York and elsewhere. Dominic has appeared as a sideman on more than 50 recordings. • Ellington Carthan, piano Eliot Seppa, bass Allen Bernard Branch, drums Just like his namesake, jazz pulses through Ellington Carthan’s veins. This up-and-coming jazz pianist, whose diverse career includes performing, teaching, producing, and composing, holds dual degrees in jazz studies and music technology. Born in California and raised in North Carolina, it’s perhaps Carthan’s bicoastal upbringing that make him such a versatile musician. Like his mentor, celebrated pianist Cyrus Chestnut, Carthan enjoys mixing genres and resists being typecast. Carthan has been honored to perform at prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center, Strathmore AMP, the Library of Congress, Smithsonian museums, Howard University, and more. Notable Collaborators: Afro Blue, Warren Wolf, Kris Funn, Cyrus Chesnut, Josanne Francis, Sarah Reich, Elijah Jamal Balbed, Michael Bowie, Imani-Grace Cooper, and Rochelle Rice. Eliot Seppa is a bassist, composer, arranger, and bandleader from Washington, DC. He began playing the upright bass at nine years old and the electric bass at 14. Eliot graduated from Howard University with his Bachelor’s degree in 2013 and his Master’s degree in 2018, both in Music - Jazz Studies. Eliot is equally comfortable playing bass with an orchestra, jazz quintet, R&B singer, gospel choir, or afrobeat band. His ability and affinity for soaking in the nuances of many different genres has led him to opportunities to perform with many of the top musicians in the DC area and tour internationally with artists such as Raul Midon, Cecily and The Jogo Project. Eliot leads jazz groups ranging in size from a trio to a big band. His music embraces rich harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and organic interplay between the band members. Allen Bernard Branch, a.k.a Aldo B., is a master percussionist, background vocalist and multi-instrumentalist (piano, keyboard, guitar, bass). Born and raised in Baltimore, Aldo attended the Baltimore School for the Arts where he studied percussion with Donna DiStefano and John Locke of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. After attending the Baltimore City Community College, Aldo toured the United States with various bands and throughout Europe with the Original USA Gospel Singers and Band. After three European tours, Aldo moved to New York City and played with multiple bands. Aldo was scouted by a casting agent to appear as Carlton Barrett of The Wailers in the HBO series, Vinyl in 2016. Aldo is a student at The Peabody Institute (anticipated Bachelors of Music, 2021), a musician for The Friendship Baptist Church, a keyboardist for The Living Word Ministries and a bassist and percussionist for the Unified Voices Choir of Johns Hopkins Hospital (UV). With UV, Aldo has accompanied such artists asVicki Winans, Beverly Crawford, Daryl Coley, Stevie Wonder, Lecrecia Campbell, Kathy Taylor, D’Atra Hicks, David and Tamela Mann. • “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” “Walk Like a Man.” “Sherri.” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” Nothing says ‘60s doo-wop like Frankie Valli. One of the most distinctive voices in all of the American music, Frankie’s dazzling falsetto has become the stuff of legend. And The Four Seasons is hotter than ever thanks to the volcanic success of the Tony-winning musical Jersey Boys, which chronicled the life and times of the Newark rock ‘n’ rollers. For over five decades, Frankie and The Four Seasons have been a top concert draw on stages coast-to-coast and around the world. “Frankie Valli’s voice is a thing of wonder. Every high note—and there are many—is hit with laser-guided precision. Oh, what a night, indeed!”
