  • Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar, John Scofield is a creative artist of an even rarer sort: a stylistic chameleon who has forged a consistent, rock-solid aesthetic identity. A triple Grammy award-winning artist with more than 40 recordings to his credit, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop, blues, jazz-funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, electronically tinged groove music, jam band style and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. Affectionately called, Yankee Go Home, Scofield’s latest project covers Americana/Rock hits and jazzed-out folk songs, with a few original tunes in the roots/rock/jazz vein. “I’m reconnecting with a lot of my teenaged Rock ‘n Roll roots – naturally colored by my 50 years of Jazz practices,” Scofield says, “For me this is a play on we “Yankees” taking up the music of our homeland.” He’s been working on reinterpretations of music from Leonard Bernstein to Neil Young, Buddy Holly to Stevie Wonder, and the Grateful Dead. “My main focus in guitar playing has always centered around being part of a group, exploring the music that happens when musicians listen to each other and improvise together. Quite frankly, until now, I’ve avoided playing solo concerts and, before starting this endeavor, had done only one solo performance in public since I was a child. I still have occasional nightmares about playing Greensleeves for my sixth-grade class! It gets pretty lonely up there by yourself, and I hadn’t considered solo guitar as the perfect platform for improvising. Not to mention that I’m no Segovia either! All that said, after playing guitar for 56 years, I’m finally interested in going it alone and exploring the possibilities. It’s taken me decades to realize that I’ve been playing unaccompanied guitar at home or in hotel rooms every day since 1962! I’ve put a lot of thought in lately to how I can present an evening of solo guitar that represents my passions and sensibilities. My idea is to keep it song-based, playing jazz, country and rock tunes that I love as well as some of my original compositions. I plan to employ my Looper pedal occasionally when I want to play over myself. I’ve been preparing for nearly a year, working my brain in new directions while looking forward to these shows with excitement and a small bit of trepidation. I hope you enjoy being on this journey with me.”
  • CELEBRATE THE SEASON with NYC vocalist Lizzie Thomas and her swinging jazz band. Get into the spirit as Lizzie reimagines the holiday & Christmas classics you know and love. She dazzles!

Lizzie Thomas is an inventive jazz singer with a beautiful voice and a swinging style who loves to perform fresh and heartfelt versions of standards from the Great American Songbook. On her five recordings and in her popular and entertaining live performances, she introduces audiences to classic songs that are still timeless and relevant today.

    Lizzie Thomas - vocals

    John Di Martino- piano

    Yoshi Waki- bass

    Carmen Intorre JR -drums

    Antoinne Drye - trumpet

DUO Encounters, which will be released by Dot Time in March 2023, teams Lizzie Thomas with a dozen major instrumentalists on one duet apiece. Rather than sing a conventional set in front of an accompanying pianist or guitarist, the interpretations are adventurous, filled with close interplay between the artists, and contain plenty of variety in instrumentation, mood, and tempos. Lizzie shares the spotlight with pianists Helio Alves, John Di Martino, and Rossanno Sportiello, guitarists Russell Malone, Ron Affif, and Guilherme Monteiro, bassists Ron Carter (“Willow Weep For Me”), Noriko Ueda, and Dezron Douglas (a version of “Have You Met Miss Jones” that includes the rarely heard verse), percussionist Café (“Nature Boy”), tenor-saxophonist Wayne Escoffery (“Lush Life”), and cellist Mairi Dorman-Phaneuf (a haunting version of “’Round Midnight”). The result is a memorable set of superbly sung and often-surprising music, Lizzie Thomas’ most rewarding recording to date.

As usual, she digs deep into the lyrics and uplifts each song, but these performances also convey a sense of happiness and joy at finally having the opportunity to interact with other musicians after the worst days of the pandemic.

When asked what qualities a song needs to have for her to want to perform it, Lizzie shares, “I'm a lover of melody and lyrics. I love uncovering tunes that are unknown, but also reimagining standards with a great arrangement. Within my live show, surprising my audience with folk and nontraditional jazz selections is a must, and I have a special love for Brazilian music. I enjoy educating my audience about the songs, the stories, and the composers. If I have someone come up after my set and say they were inspired to daydream and think of new ideas, I know I did a great job. My favorite comment is, ‘I was transformed- as if I was in another space and time.’”
  • Eric "Kraz" Krasno is a New York-based Grammy-winning guitarist, songwriter, recording artist, and producer best known for his work with Soulive and Lettuce, both of which he co-founded. His own musical roots lie in funk, jazz, rock, and hip-hop, and he has written songs and produced records for a variety of artists in a range of genres including Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, Talib Kweli, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ledisi, 50 Cent, and Matisyahu.

Krasno was raised in the suburbs of New York City, and in Fairfield County, Connecticut. His earliest influences were his musician grandfather, a professional pianist who played gypsy jazz and swing, as well as his older brother and father, also accomplished musicians though amateurs. His early attraction to classic rock records from Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jeff Beck, and Grateful Dead influenced his decision to become a guitarist. He began playing in local bands during high school. After graduating, he attended the Berklee School of Music for one semester before transferring to Hampshire College. Despite its brevity, it was at Berklee that he encountered other founding members of the funk/jam unit Lettuce during a summer program. The band formed while its members were still in their teens and have been a going concern in both the studio and on concert stages since then. In 1999, he joined brothers Alan and Neal Evans, and Sam Kininger, to co-found Soulive, a jazz/hip-hop/folk/groove unit that recorded for several labels including Blue Note and, like Lettuce, they're known for a rigorous touring schedule.

Krasno began his career as a producer on Kweli's Quality in 2002. His reputation spread among hip-hop artists, and under various monikers he worked with a variety of rappers including Redman and Pharoah Monche, and R&B, jazz, pop, and rock artists including Keyshia Cole, Allen Stone, Dave Matthews Band, Justin Timberlake, and Nigel Hall. As a guitarist, Krasno's work has graced albums and tours by everyone from the Beatnuts, Snoop Dog, and Sonya Kitchell to Vieux Farka Toure, Christian McBride, Joshua Redman, and Dr. Lonnie Smith.

Krasno issued Reminisce, his debut solo album in 2010 on SOI, and toured with his own group while continuing to play and record with Lettuce and Phil Lesh & Friends. His sophomore offering, Blood from a Stone, was released in July 2016 through Feel Records. It was preceded by the singles "Waiting for Your Love" and "On the Rise." The latter set showcased his lead vocals for the first time alongside his playing and songwriting. Krasno and his road sextet toured throughout the summer supporting Dumpstaphunk. The same year, he produced Neville's Apache album. The studio band he enlisted included members of Lettuce, Soulive, the Dap Kings, and Budos Band. ~ Thom Jurek

The Emerging Artist Festival, now in its 5th year, celebrates youth involvement in jazz.

On Friday evening, the VJC will once again team up with local high schools and universities as well as Gallery Walk and Downtown Brattleboro Alliance to present youth jazz ensembles in local venues, including the Boys and Girls Club and the 118 Elliot Street Gallery for evening performances.

During the day on Saturday, the VJC will team up with area schools and the Vermont Association of Jazz Educators to feature student groups who will perform for each other and be coached by clinicians including festival headliner, Dan Wilson.

Daytime activities will culminate in a clinic offered by Wilson to area youth and aficionados of jazz and blues.

Saturday evening at 8:00 PM, Rising Star Award-winning jazz guitarist Wilson will perform the marquee event for the general public.

Dan Wilson has been hailed for his performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, his work with Christian McBride’s ‘Tip City’ and his Grammy-nominated recording as a member of Joey DeFrancesco’s Project Freedom band.

Wilson’s musicianship was cultivated while growing up in the church in Akron, Ohio.

That connection with gospel and uplifted spirit permeates his work as a solo artist (he has three albums out as a leader) and informs his appearances as a sideman with Eric Marienthal, Russell Malone, Les McCann, René Marie, Jeff Hamilton, David Sanborn, Dave Stryker and others.
