  • Meshell Ndegeocello is a bassist, vocalist and singer-songwriter who has just released her 12th album, 'Ventriliquism', a covers record featuring unique takes on songs by Prince, TLC, George Clinton, Janet Jacksonand Sade.

    From her 1993 debut 'Plantation Lullabies' through to her latest release, Meshell Ndegéocello has built a consistent body of work which embraces jazz, R&B, rock and hip hop.

    Over the years Meshell has worked with artists such as Chaka Khan, DJ Premier, Wah-Wah Watson, John Mellencamp, Billy Preston, Oumou Sangare, Pat Metheny, Joe Henry, Lisa Germano and many more.
  • John Scofield has been playing the guitar since 1962. His influence in the music scene began in the mid-70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1975. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer. Since that time, he has prominently led his own groups in the international jazz scene, recorded close to 50 albums as a leader in the company of such major players as Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Brad Mehldau and Eddie Harris. He’s played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, MMW, Govt Mule, Lettuce and Phil Lesh to mention a few of his favorites. Throughout his career John has punctuated his traditional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electronic music. Touring the world approximately 200 days per year with his own groups, he's a husband, father, grandfather, and dachshund walker when he's home.


    Dave Holland is a bassist, composer, bandleader whose passion for musical expression of all styles, and dedication to creating consistently innovative music ensembles have propelled a professional career of more than 50 years, and earned him top honors in his field including multiple Grammy awards and the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2017.

    Holland stands as a guiding light on acoustic and electric bass, having grown up in an age when musical genres—jazz, rock, funk, avant-garde, folk, electronic music, and others—blended freely together to create new musical pathways. He was a leading member of a generation that helped usher jazz bass playing from its swing and post-bop legacy to the vibrancy and multidiscipline excitement of the modern era, extending the instrument’s melodic, expressive capabilities. Holland’s virtuosic technique and rhythmic feel, informed by an open-eared respect of a formidable spread of styles and sounds, is widely revered and remains much in demand. To date, His playing can be heard on hundreds of recordings, with more than thirty as a leader under his own name.
  • Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz.

    His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri.

    Palmieri’s parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle’s orchestra, playing timbales.

    Palmieri’s professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s including Eddie Forrester, Johnny Segui’s, and the popular Tito Rodriguez Orchestra. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri disbanded La Perfecta in 1968 to pursue different musical endeavors, though he would return to the band’s music in the 2000s.
  • Christian Sands’ third recording for Mack Avenue Music Group captures and establishes him as a forceful leader in composition and conceptual vision. With Be Water (available May 22 worldwide), the music is akin to the element which has no form of its own, taking on the structure of whatever musical composition and performance in which it finds itself and is a universal necessity.
  • Red Baraat is a pioneering band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound, a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. But even as it’s clear that Red Baraat has built a startling history of performances in iconic settings, the band’s bread and butter remains the sweaty clubs, festivals, packed performing arts centers, and college auditoriums that keeps the band on the road all over the world the last several years. It’s here where Red Baraat does what it does best – communing with their audience in a joyful, near hedonistic celebration of music and dance, which tellingly, draws a crowd even more diverse than the players on stage. The universality of what Red Baraat does is undeniable. And this is no happy accident. It is the product of intention and design. Says Jain, “The band…our songs…are addressing the multiplicity of viewpoints,” says Jain. “There’s ‘Zindabad,’ which means ‘Long Live’ in Hindi. In that song, we’re saying that we celebrate life, we celebrate devotion — but we also celebrate agitation and revolution. If we can unite people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to partake in the exuberance of life through the universal language of music, then life is that much sweeter.”

  • The Afro-Cuban Experience showcases Dizzy Gillespie’s love of world music, which he successfully fused with jazz during his entire career. His vast repertoire includes compositions that were inspired by his love of the African, Argentinian,Brazilian, Caribbean, Cuban, and Spanish music cultures. Dizzy’s fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz was ground breaking. The well-loved melodies of “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo" are an important part of the jazz vernacular. Dizzy also wrote vibraphonist Cal Tjader’s afro-cuban hit “Soul Sauce”. Dizzy was also the first American musician to recognize the great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim’s genius with his 1957 classic recording of Jobim’s “No More Blues” and his famous recording of “Desafinado” from Dizzy on the Rivera. His well known discovery and collaboration with the great Argentinian pianist Lalo Schifrin (who Dizzy discovered in Buenos Aries during a tour of Argentina in 1956) produced many great compositions and arrangements. The ensemble features Dizzy’s longtime bassist and musical director John Lee, Freddie Hendrix on trumpet & flugelhorn, Sharel Cassity on alto saxophone & flute, Steve Carrington on tenor saxophone, Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Tommy Campbell on drums, and Roger Squitero on congas, bongos, and percussion.

  • Bethany Baptist Church hosts a free screening of the jazz documentary Oscar Peterson: Black + White. The film explores the life and music of Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, told through rare archival footage and interviews with jazz greats including Jon Batiste, Herbie Hancock and Branford Marsalis. Jazz aficionados won’t want to miss this story of a young piano prodigy turned legendary icon, directed by Barry Avrich (Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art, The Talented Mr. Rosenberg).   • Alex Isley hails from a musically-rich and versatile family. Her father, Ernie Isley, and his brothers, are collectively the R&B/Funk pioneers known as The Isley Brothers. Her maternal grandmother, an opera singer, began classically-training Alex at the age of twelve. Alex has collaborated and performed with an array of artists, from Terrace Martin to Moses Sumney; The Isley Brothers to Kendrick Lamar; with her vocals featured on Lamar’s 2016 Grammy-winning, “These Walls”. Alex is also featured on PJ Morton’s ‘The Piano Album’ (on ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ as a duet with Morton). In November 2019, Alex and producer, Jack Dine, released a joint EP entitled ‘Wilton’. They followed with their singles, ‘Gone’, ‘Good & Plenty’ with Masego, “Mine”, and later, the ‘Good & Plenty’ remix, with Lucky Daye. In 2020, Alex performed her own NPR Tiny Desk (Home Edition) and was featured on HBO’s ‘Insecure’ series. In 2021, she performed her share of Virtual Concerts, which later converted to In-Person shows around the country. In March 2022, Alex lent her vocals to Lucky Daye’s latest album, Candydrip, as well as PJ Morton’s album, ‘Watch The Sun’, performing on “Still Believe”, alongside PJ and Jill Scott. Most recently, Alex released the second, highly-anticipated album with Jack Dine, entitled ‘Marigold’. Alex continues to hone her craft, contribute and collaborate on musical ventures, and is grateful for all of the opportunities in her journey.
