The Emmy-winning writer, actor, comedian and SNL alum is on tour with From Scratch, a new set tackling addiction, relapse and controversy in the public eye.   • John Yao and His 17-piece Instrument (JY-17 for short) features the diverse compositions of trombonist, composer and arranger John Yao. Established in 2014, the 17-piece ensemble is comprised of New York City’s finest jazz musicians including members of Grammy- award winning ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, both of which Yao has been a regular substitute for over a decade and have had a profound influence on his compositional style. “At times angular and broken, other times linear and swinging, he offers a broad view of the possibilities of jazz composition,” says Jim McNeely of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. In celebration of his birthday month of August, the JY-17 will perform the music of jazz legend Charlie Parker. The band will premiere several new arrangements that will put a new spin on Bird’s music.

  • Jazz in the Valley (JITV) returns Sunday, August 15, 2021, noon to 6:00 pm, with a celebration of Legacy, History and the Future of Jazz.  Presented by TRANSART & Cultural Services, Inc., the day-long festival features its Artistic Director Javon Jackson and his Quartet and celebrates the future of jazz with four young musicians – the Curtis Brothers, Lakecia Benjamin, Julius Rodriguez and Samara Joy – who are taking the jazz tradition to the next level.   • Kalia Vandever - Trombone Sasha Berliner - Vibes Tyrone Allen - Bass Connor Parks - Drums Kalia Vandever is a trombonist, composer, and educator living in Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of Julliard’s Jazz Studies program in 2017, she released her debut album, In Bloom; in May, 2019 which features all of her original composition. She has since toured and performed internationally with her quartet, as well as a side-woman, performing with artists including on Saturday Night Live with Demi Lovato and on Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal with Lizzo. She has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Preservation Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, The Jazz Gallery, the Blue Note, and the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center, among others.
