Akinmusire is a multiyear winner of Downbeat’s critics’ choice awards for Trumpeter of the Year (including 2021) and Jazz Artist of the Year.

A visionary artist with six albums as a leader, he is a first call sideman found on recordings with Joni Mitchell, Brad Mehldau, Kendrick Lamar and many others.

Ambrose Akinmusire is a truth-teller whose music is an expression of his personal journey as a Black man. Although he loves playing jazz standards, he has chosen to compose original music that draws attention to the realities of racism.

The list of his accolades include Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition Winner, Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Solo Competition Winner; Downbeat Critics Poll: Jazz Artist of the Year, Best Trumpet (numerous times); Jazz Times Critic’s Poll: Trumpeter of the Year (3 times), Artist of the Year, Record of the Year; New York Times Best Jazz Album of the year (2011), Jazz Journalist Association Trumpeter of the Year and others too numerous to mention.

His discography includes 6 albums as a leader and sideman work with Kendrick Lamar, Joni Mitchell, Joel Ross, Brad Mehldau, Marcus Miller, Trilok Gurtu, the Yellow Jackets, Jack DeJohnette, Archie Shepp,Terri Lyne Carrington, Roy Hargrove, Mimi Jones, Esperanza Spalding,Tom Harrell and many others.

This will be a free concert on the church front lawn, open to all. CARRIE JACKSON is a metropolitan area based vocal stylist and rekindles thoughts of America's great jazz history. Carrie credits her mentors the great ladies of jazz; Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, and others as a primary musical influence for her style, which indelibly helped shape vocal jazz for every generation. Carrie attributes her vocal style of singing from her mentors and made them a part of her, also bringing new horizons to this classical American art form called Jazz. The truth is that she has a bit of all of them and more that is uniquely her own style and proudly carries the jazz banner. Carrie is a vocalist and performer, a native of Newark, NJ, and honed her many talents in the jazz mecca of performing arts while performing throughout the USA and abroad. She spreads and shares her joy and well-honed expertise on the stage. Ms. Jackson, with her multifaceted singing style, can harmonize swing and scat, swings classic jazz standards with sweet soul; wails the blues, cabaret, pop tunes, ballads, or Gospel, all complimented by her engaging stage presence and graceful moves. Carrie has a wide range with a strong command of the classic elements of jazz vocalizing. She is a gifted lyricist, has great timing and truly sings from her heart and is comfortable performing with a Small Ensemble, Big band and or Orchestra. All ages are welcome. Led by Bay Area jazz guitarist and composer John Schott, an all-star group of musicians will convene a continuous eight hour jazz "study" of Thelonious Monk’s famous ballad, 'Round Midnight. Over the course of the night, the musicians will approach the piece as one would approach a Torah portion, examining every phrase carefully in an all-night study session.

On Thursday, March 31st from 5:00 – 6:30 pm in Dorothy Maynor Hall at the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA), the brilliant young pianist, bandleader and composer Isaiah J. Thompson will guide the HSA’s young instrumentalist student group, through a masterclass that includes a critique on technique, performance and improvisational skills. The session will conclude with a performance by Mr. Thompson. This young keyboardist has perfected his style and approach performing with jazz royalty including Ron Carter, John Pizzarelli, Christian McBride, Steve Turre and Buster Williams. A graduate of Juilliard, he began his love affair with music at an early age, attending The Calderone School of Music and later joining Jazz House Kids and NJPAC Jazz for Kids. Now at the tender age of 24 he is garnering global recognition for what one reporter called the “...ability to deliver the so elusive X factor across a wide range of jazz styles.” Mr. Thompson is a 2018 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award recipient, took second place at the Thelonious Monk Competition, was named a Steinway Artist, worked on the Golden Globe nominated soundtrack for Motherless Brooklyn directed by actor Edward Norton, starring Willem Dafoe, Alec Baldwin and Bobby Cannavale. Isaiah was one of the featured players on The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis 2016 album, Handful of Keys, which charted the evolution of the piano over the 20th century, and included performances by pianists Joey Alexander, Dick Hyman, Myra Melford, and Helen Sung. In 2020, he released his debut album as a leader titled, Isaiah J. Thompson Plays the Music of Buddy Montgomery.

Two times Grammy nominee pianist Benito Gonzalez is an internationally beloved artist who combines a long lineage of American jazz traditions with rhythms from around the world. He’s worked with dozens of the greats, and he always brings some of the best rhythm section players in the world. Expect to hear an elite trio performing Original music, McCoy Tyner classics, or even a favorite John Coltrane tune.

Benito is being recognized as an exciting pianist and composer for his well-received debut album ‘Starting Point’ (Christian McBride, Antonio Sanchez, Rene McLean, Ron Blake) in addition to taking home first prize at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition.

Benito’s acclaimed album, Passion Reverence Transcendence Featuring: (Essiet Okon Essiet and Gerry Gibbs), reveals a very personal body of work as he emerges as a leader and an accomplished improviser. Recently, Benito received more critical attention for his work on this great tribute to Music Legend "McCoy Tyner" also received two Grammy Nominations with The Kenny Garrett Quartet, The albums Seeds from the Underground, and Pushing The World Away.

After seven years of touring with Kenny Garrett, Benito has added numerous festivals and international jazz club dates to his credit. In 2019, he joined legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders as a pianist and musical director.
