NYC Combating Rise in Hate Crimes Against Asain Community

NYC Mayors Office

New York City is ramping up its effort to combat a rise in hate crimes against the Asian community.

Congresswoman Grace Meng points to a recent random slashing of a Filipino man on a subway train and an Asian America woman getting shoved to the ground in Queens.

“So many Asian Americans literally live in fear and are afraid to leave their homes because they don’t know what may happen to them.”

There were 16 violent anti-Asian hate crimes in 2020 and more than two dozen crimes categorized as coronavirus hate crimes against Asians last year.  The city has a new section on its website where people can report the hate crimes.  City officials will be meeting with Asian community leaders to discuss the matter.
