New NYPD Policy Gives Public A Say In Police Leadership

New York City continues with police reform moves. A new policy gives the public some say in police leadership.

A police precinct community council will now interview three to five candidates when a precinct commander position opens up.

The council will then give feedback to the police commissioner who then decides on the job. The community council will evaluate the commander’s worker annually. Police Commissioner Dermot Shea is on board.

“People want to feel a connection to their NYPD and especially at the leadership positions and this I think really goes very far into building that trust both ways.”

Mayor de Blasio says this will deepen dialogue between community and police and improve accountability.
