Work is now starting on the first phase of the Greenway project in Newark that will become New Jersey's newest state park.
This greenway will go nine miles through eight Hudson and Essex County communities from Jersey City to Montclair. The greenway will offer outdoor recreation and welcome bikers and walkers. It will be built on an old rail line. State Senator Theresa Ruiz was on hand for Tuesday's groundbreaking in Newark between Summer Avenue and Broadway.
"This is the reversal of economic injustice to a community that was burdened for decades with a railroad."
There will be design elements showcasing the role the old rail line played in transporting iron ore and blocks of ice.
