New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander is out of custody after being arrested at an immigration court hearing in Lower Manhattan Tuesday.
Lander says he was trying to escort out an immigrant who federal agents were looking to arrest and then ICE agents put handcuffs on Lander. He could be seen on video repeatedly asking if the agents had a warrant as he was being arrested.
"I am not obstruction, I am standing right here in the hallway. I asked to see a judicial warrant."
Homeland Security says Lander was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer.
"I certainly did not assault an officer."
Lander was released a few hours later but wasn't formally charged. His fellow Democrats running for mayor condemned the arrest. Governor Hochul joined Lander after he was released to condemn the arrest.
