NYC council passes controversial police officer paperwork bill

The New York City council has passed a controversial bill that requires police officers to fill out paperwork during every stop.

Council members on Wednesday passed legislation requiring police officers to fill out detailed paperwork for every single stop including asking the person's race, age and gender. Councilwoman Crystal Hudson says this will help hold officers accountable for unlawful stops and help prevent racial profiling.

"These bills won't require hours of extra paperwork as reports like these can be done quickly on an officer's smartphone."

Mayor Eric Adams opposes the legislation, saying officers will be putting more effort into paperwork and less on policing. There's enough council support for the bill to override any potential veto by the mayor.
