Trash bins being mandated for most NYC residents

WBGO News

Many in New York City will be forced to switch over to containerizing there garbage.

About a year from now, New Yorkers who live in buildings with nine or fewer units will be required to switch over from trash bags to secure bins in a move to do away with smelly leaky trash bags and reduce the number of rats. this is about 95 percent of the residential properties in New York City. Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tische says in 2026, residents will be required to buy the official City trash bin which will be designed to be tipped mechanically into the trucks.

"And DSNY will retrofit hundreds or replace hundreds of trucks to move past the days of throwing the bags by hand."

She says this will make garbage collection go faster. The new rules follow the recent change mandating all food related businesses to containerize their waste.
