New York city continues to see a downward trend in several major crime categories

Police officials say there was a 50 percent drop in shooting incidents in the summer months compared to last summer. Also in the third quarter of the year, there was a 23 percent drop in murders and 18 percent decline in burglaries. The number of vehicle thefts continue to rise. However, Chief Michael Lipetri says grand larceny auto arrests are at a 20 year high.

"We will continue to focus on organized auto theft and obviously vehicles we feel are being used to commit another crime."

Lipetri says felony assaults are up driven by domestic incidents and assaults on police officers.
