NYC Authorities Cracking Down On Illegal Marijuana Shops

The nonprofit Code for America is using computer algorithms to help California prosecutors comply with clearing criminal records of certain marijuana convictions.

New York City authorities are going hard after illegal marijuana shops.

With more legal recreational marijuana dispensaries coming online soon in New York, authorities are trying to shutdown the scores of places illegally selling pot. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sent a letter to hundreds of smoke shops in Manhattan warning them of potential for eviction proceedings if they continue to illegally sell weed.

“Those legitimate businesses face stiff competition from shops that are not following the rules. It’s time for the operation of unlicensed cannabis dispensaries to end.”

Mayor Eric Adams is hoping shutting down the illegal market will help with crime. He says the unregulated smoke shops have become attractive for robberies.
