There’s very heavy security for the J’Ouvert Festival taking place on Labor Day in Brooklyn followed by the West Indian Day Parade at 11 o’clock.
The Entire West Indian Day Parade route along Eastern Parkway is a barricaded frozen zone because of the violent history associated with J’Ouvert and the parade in the past. NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Kemper says officers are checking for weapons, alcohol and illegal contraband.
“All participants and spectators who wish to participate will be required to pass through a security entry point prior to entering the parade route where they are going to be wanded with a metal detector.”
The large Caribbean celebration activities are back to normal for the first time since 2019 because of coronavirus. There are more than 100-thousand parade participants.
