An ATF agent poses with homemade rifles, or "ghost guns," at an agency field office in Glendale, Calif. There's a growing industry of companies that sell gun kits, instructions and do-it-yourself components online to help people build their own guns.

New York City officials are sounding the alarm about ghost guns.

Mayor Adams and Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell wrote a letter to federal authorities asking them to crackdown on online companies selling ghost guns, which are guns made from kits that are mostly untraceable.

“The companies that sell them don’t ask if you have a permit. They don’t ask if you have a gun license, and they don’t require you to go through a background check to buy a gun that is unassembled.”

Stats show more and more ghost guns are being taken out of the hands of criminals on New York City Streets. The police commissioner says this is the new phase in the fight against illegal guns.
