Kersten Stevens

Having come from an impressive classical music foundation at Yale University, winning six times at Amateur Night at The Apollo, performing for President Barack Obama, Denzel Washington and Ray Charles, and performing with Regina Carter and Christian McBride, violinist Kersten Stevens is indeed a Queen Rising. Surrounded by a stellar group, including McBride, Miki Hayama on organ, piano, keys and Wurlitzer, guitarist Seth Johnson, drummer Eric Harland, flutist Ragan Whiteside and percussionist Luisito Quintero, hear this string queen rising on tunes by Donny Hathaway, Earth, Wind & Fire, and originals arranged or co-written by McBride. It's guaranteed to get a rise out of you!

From Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 8, one cut from Kersten Stevens’ album Queen Rising will be featured each morning in the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
