With Cry Me A River, the Cuban-Canadian composer/pianist Hilario Duran puts a big band focus on his Afro-Caribbean culture, infusing his playing and arrangements, first learned when following Chucho Valdes into the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna. Here there is a nod to legends Bebo Valdes, Perez Prado and Juanito Marquez, alongside a salute to Charles Mingus. With special guests Paquito D'Rivera, Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez and OKAN, this percolating performance is a fabulous experience to encounter during Hispanic Heritage Month.
From Monday, October 9 through Friday, October 13, one cut from Cry Me a River album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.
