Anthony Hervey’s ‘Words from My Horn’’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play July 10-14

When Anthony Hervey was in the 6th grade, growing up in Florida, his mother told him not to play alto sax like his siblings, but rather the trumpet. Mama knew best, and two minutes of listening to Freddie Hubbard sealed the deal. A graduate of Juilliard, I first heard him on Christian McBride's tribute to Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Oliver Nelson. Then I saw him live with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and the deal was sealed for me. Words From My Horn is Anthony's debut, and it has him alongside pianists Isaiah J. Thompson and Sean Mason, bassist Philip Norris, alto saxophonist Sarah Hanahan and drummer Miguel Russell.

You can see him on our trip to Caramoor on July 22.

From Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, one cut from the Words from My Horn album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
