Guitar Masters Series: Rodney Jones

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Rodney Jones brings his formidable quartet to Zinc jazz club on Monday, February 20.
Rodney started playing the guitar at age 6. He has recorded two records for the Blue Note label, “The Undiscovered Few” and “Soul Manifesto”. He has toured worldwide, performed, and recorded with a who’s who of music including Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Lena Horne, Quincy Jones, Christian McBride, Stevie Wonder, Elvin Jones, Kenny Burrell, Stan Getz, and countless others. He was the house guitarist for the Apollo Theatre for 9 years, and the staff guitarist for the Rosie O’Donnell Show for 6 years. He has written commercials and has more than 125 compositions recorded. He recently scored a documentary film for PBS about African American GIs in WW2. He served as Musical Director/Producer for Lena Horne, Ruth Brown, Gloria Lynne, Ernestine Anderson, and others. He has been a professor of Jazz Guitar Studies at The Juilliard School for 12 years and at The Manhattan School of Music for more than 20 years and has conducted clinics and workshops worldwide.

IMMANUEL WILKINS QUARTET livestream from the Vermont Jazz Center
The Vermont Jazz Center is pleased to complete its 2020-21 livestream season with a concert by the highly acclaimed Immanuel Wilkins Quartet on June 5th, 2021. Immanuel Wilkins, alto saxophone, composer Micah Thomas, piano Daryl Johns, bass Kweku Sumbry, drums This young group, each of whom is in their early to mid-twenties, has been touring, recording and creating together since their teens and has been a solid, performing ensemble for four years. The Immanuel Wilkins Quartet’s debut record, Omega, released on Blue Note and produced by Jason Moran, has received NPR’s Best Debut Jazz Album of 2020 and topped the New York Times’ Best Jazz Albums of 2020. Other accolades showered upon Wilkins include Best New Talent of 2020 by Musica Jazz, and a LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award. In past years, our concerts happen “live” and in person and are valued at $40 per ticket. This year, with live streaming, we are relying on donations to offset costs. Noriko Ueda Duo at the Great Jones Distilling Co. Jazz Lounge
Every Saturday, we’re inviting NYC’s top musicians & magicians to perform in our art deco cocktail lounge, from local legends to Grammy award-winners. This week’s musical act is the Noriko Ueda Duo, who is originally from Hyogo, Japan. Her interest in music began early in her life, studying classical piano at the age of 4. At 16, she began playing the electric bass. At age 18, she began her career with the upright bass. After she graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston where she majored in Jazz Composition, she relocated to NYC.
Noriko has performed at many historical jazz venues include “Carnegie Hall”, “Blue Note New York”, “Jazz at Lincoln Center – Dizzy’s Club”, “Kennedy Center”, “Hollywood Ball”and “Birdland”.
Noriko is a member of “ARTEMIS” lead by Renee Rosnes. Toured in Europe several times, and had a sold out concert at Carnegie Hall, and the Debut album “ARTEMIS” was released from BLUE NOTE RECORDS. (2020) She has toured in Japan with Ted Rosenthal Trio 13 times (2006 – 2019), and our CD “Out of this World” which reached #1 on the national jazz radio charts. (2011)
Her first leader Trio album “DEBUT” has released from the Japanese record company “Terashima Records”. (2015)
She performed at Blue Note New York several times with her leading band, “Noriko Ueda Trio”, Quartet and her big band “Noriko Ueda Jazz Orchestra”, also as a featured artist. (2002 – 2018)
She has played with “The DIVA Jazz Orchestra” also “Five Play” over 15 years and performed for many projects including the collaboration with Johnny Mandel (2010), and recording the music track for Macy’s July 4th fire works event which was broadcast on NBC, included a big band piece she arranged. (2014).
She is the winner of the Charlie Parker Jazz composition Prize founded by Broadcast Music Inc for her original big band piece “Castle in the North”. (2002)
She also has performed with various groups including the legendary musicians, Frank Wess, Kenny Barron, Grady Tate, Nancy Wilson and Bill Charlap.
