Elijah Jamal Balbed - Saxophone James Collins - Organ Eric Tapper - Drums Elijah Jamal Balbed is an award-winning Saxophonist in Washington, DC. A native of the nation's capital and graduate of the legendary Jazz program at Howard University. Named Best Tenor Saxophonist (2017) and Best New Jazz Musician (2010) by the Washington City Paper, Elijah has established himself as one of the top Jazz Artists in the area. In 2018 & 2019, Elijah led cultural diplomacy tours in Russia as Jazz Ambassadors on behalf of the U.S. State Department. In 2020, Elijah won the DC Jazz Prix International Band Competition, and in 2021 performed at the Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival (#PAPJAZZ). Most recently, Elijah was featured in The Washington Post for his efforts to keep live music alive throughout the pandemic - a series now known as #JazzMobDC. For this concert at An Die Musik, Elijah will bring his organ trio featuring James Collins on Organ and Eric Tapper on Drums. The three have been performing regularly as a trio recently, with an ever-growing repertoire ranging from Larry Young, Wayne Shorter, Duke Pearson, and even some original music. Come out or tune in to witness this great trio for a night of swingin', soulful music. Todrick Hall is celebrating Pride with the release of his new album, Femuline, released on June 8th. The album’s lead single, “Boys In The Ocean,” is an irresistible funk jam that rides along an infectious bassline and guitar licks, primed for summer escapism. Femuline follows Hall’s 2020 EP Quarantine Queen and exudes a new confidence and power, with plenty of dancefloor-ready tracks. Hall’s magnetic charisma shines through and his cheeky lyricism is an embodiment of his larger-than-life persona.   Hall says, “It has taken me years and years, even after coming out, to be this comfortable embracing my masculine and feminine sides. The Calvin Hill Group will be performing the initial concert in the Englewood Public Library's 9th annual Summer Jazz Concert Series - "Jazz Under the Stars". This acclaimed series will be take place every Thursday evening at 7:30 from June 24 through August 26 on the library's front plaza. The concert series is free and open to the public. Bassist, Composer, Arranger, and Educator Calvin Hill was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and started the study of music at 10 years of age. Hill played trumpet, trombone, and saxophone in school bands, and switched to bass his last year of high school. Mr. Hill received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Berklee College of Music. He has also received a Master of Special Education from Hunter College. Calvin's first musical experiences were on the Boston music scene, where he became the regular bassist in the area's nightclubs. This enabled him to perform with a wide variety of artists, everyone from Billy Eckstine, Mel Torme, Mose Allison to John Lee Hooker the Kirby Stone Four and Matt Monroe. While in Boston, Calvin met and played with Joanne Brackeen, whom he continues to play with today. Hill moved to New York in 1969. His first big gig was with the McCoy Tyner Quartet. Calvin recorded Sahara with the group. The record was voted Album of the Year by the critics at Downbeat magazine. Calvin has been a member of the groups of Pharaoh Sanders, Betty Carter, George Coleman, James Moody, Chet Baker, Junior Mance and Max Roach. Hill is still an active studio musician and also tours and works with various artists, including the Spirit of Life Ensemble, as well as his own Quartet or Quintet. Hill's own 2005 CD release I Can't Give You Anything But Love was a critical success and is available in the Englewood Library through the BCCLS system. NJSO Concertmaster Eric Wyrick leads the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players in Florence Price’s Five Folksongs in Counterpoint, an exploration of African American spirituals from a pathbreaking Black composer. Mendelssohn’s Octet, one of the composer’s finest earlier works, rounds out the program. The Arts in the Garden series is a partnership between The Newark Museum of Art & New Jersey Symphony Orchestra to bring you a vibrant outdoor series of concerts, films, and cultural celebrations. All programs will take place in the Museum’s Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden with a limited capacity and safety guidelines to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience.
