New works by Lucinda Childs, Chanon Judson, Justin Peck, Leonardo Sandoval, and Bobbi Jene Smith with Or Schraiber with pianists Timo Andres, Anton Batagov, Conor Hanick, Noé Kains, and Maki Namekawa as they perform and interpret the composer's Glass Etudes throughout Kaatsbaan's lush 153-acres in the Hudson Valley.  Rounding out the Fall Festival includes special music concert; Trisha Brown: In Plain Site, by Trisha Brown Dance Company, curated specifically for Kaatsbaan; and a special screening of Steven Spielberg's film version of West Side Story, with choreography by New York City Ballet Resident Choreographer and Kaatsbaan Advisory Board member Justin Peck. ​The film screening will be followed by a performance and dance party led by Ricky Ubeda (Flaco) from the West Side Story film, closing out the 2022 Festival season. Taylor Mac is reunited with longtime collaborators co-director Niegel Smith, choreographer Faye Driscoll and costume designer Machine Dazzle and creative producers Pomegranate Arts. Mac, who is a 2017 MacArthur "genius grant" recipient, and collaborators will create the work during a month-long Kaatsbaan residency, culminating in this performance celebrating Pride month in the Hudson Valley.   June 19: Community Event Commemorating Juneteenth  Saxophonist and composer Tyrone Birkett and his ensemble Emancipation, perform his Postmodern Spirituals and a new composition in collaboration with New York City-based dancer and choreographer Robert Rubama. Zoom Tunes- February 27, 2022 session presented by the Vermont Jazz Center Last Sunday of each month, 7:00-8:30 pm EST ON-LINE; $15 per session https://vtjazz.org/zoom-tunes-2/ Because indoor jam sessions with horn players and vocalists are unfeasible at this time, the Jazz Center is hosting Zoom Tunes, an online version of a jam session that is as inclusive as possible. The format was devised & is run by VJC’s junior faculty. Zoom Tunes will take place on the last Sunday of each month. For each session, participants individually play the “tune of the month” using an inexpensive app (iReal Pro) as accompaniment. The app is a digital play-along system with a library of jazz tunes that gives musicians access to backing tracks with easy adjustments in tempo, key & feel. The Zoom Tune for February 27 is ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing’ by Duke Ellington. https://vtjazz.org/it-dont-mean-a-thing-2-27-22-lead-sheets-backing-tracks/ During a Zoom Tunes jam, participants divide into breakout rooms supervised by one of the coaches. Each participant plays their own version of the given tune, either solo or with a backing track. After playing their interpretation, players receive guidance and support from the other attendees & Zoom Tunes coaches Malik McLaurine (bass), Ben Barnett (trombone) & Franz Robert (piano). Playing the same composition and hearing well-considered advice creates a bonding experience among participants. Listening to others play the same repertoire can be inspiring & fun & leads to a fruitful learning experience. Singers are more than welcomed & are encouraged to use iReal Pro’s transpose feature to adjust the song’s key to suit their vocal range.

DROM is proud to launch its first weekly artist residency with famed percussionist and vocalist Pedrito Martinez and his group. The Grammy-nominated Cuban musician will bring his signature, high-energy Afro-Cuban sound to the East Village venue every Thursday, starting February 3rd, 2022, effectively kicking off the venue’s 15th Anniversary season. Martinez has performed at DROM regularly since the venue re-opened in May after a 15-month hiatus due to the COVID pandemic. His latest album, Acertijos (released March 2021), was nominated for Best Contemporary Tropical Album in this year’s Latin Grammys. In July 2020, Pedrito invited singer Camilla Cabello — with whom he has been recording at the time — to DROM. Together they performed her current global hit “Don’t Go Yet”, a single that features Pedrito and Manuel Marquez, a member of his group (watch here). For his weekly residency Pedrito will perform alongside Sebastian Natal on bass and vocals, Issac Delgado Jr on keyboard and vocals, Jose “Xito” Lovell on trombone and vocals and Manuel Marquez percussion and vocals. More special special guests and dancers will make appearances throughout the series.

Bloomingdale School of Music announces a community concert and spring benefit A New Bloom on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at 6:30pm at The Riverside Church Assembly Hall, 490 Riverside Drive, NYC. A New Bloom honors the legacy of Timothy McCullough, Bloomingdale School of Music Resident Teaching Artist and longtime faculty member, who passed away on November 22, 2021. https://www.bsmny.org/ Each year, Bloomingdale School of Music organizes a spring benefit punctuated with inspiring performances by BSM students and faculty. This year's event includes a variety of performances including a tribute performance for Timothy McCullough, as well as performances by students from the Music Access Program, the PS75 Partnership, and guest star Angela Birchett. This annual event raises money for Bloomingdale's programs and Student Scholarship Fund to provide access to music education for students who otherwise would not be able to afford it, and this year is more important than ever. For those wishing to get involved; you can donate directly to the event or participate in a raffle, which will be announced in the coming weeks.  Pianist Tim McCullough, a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, was not only a talented educator, performer and accompanist, but a supportive colleague and wonderful friend. He was a member of the piano faculty at BSM from 2008-2021. His untimely passing has been a tremendous loss for the BSM community, but BSM looks forward to honoring him for his longtime service to the school and celebrating his legacy that will last for many years to come. Tim was born in Cardiff, Wales into a musical family. "I am fortunate to have a father who is a very accomplished pianist. By the time I was about six weeks old I had already heard a whole host of beautiful piano literature. As a result I grew up swimming in the sound of piano music." At age eight his family relocated to Dallas, Texas and Tim later moved to New York to pursue graduate piano studies. Although Tim also studied trumpet and viola in high school, "I always seemed to drift back to the piano. There is just so much great literature for this instrument." Tim's relationships with his students and their families was incredibly special. In his honor, BSM will raise up our their families with gratitude for their resilience, adaptability, flexibility, and commitment to music learning throughout the course of the past two years. Tim was comfortable teaching students of all ages. "The great thing about teaching one-on-one lessons is that I can adjust to the individual needs of each student." Tim worked to create a solid foundation of reading skills and technique with all his students. "I also think it is of great importance for the student to have a structured routine in their everyday practice so that they can progress naturally. I want to teach my students to learn how to practice effectively at home." Although he couldn't choose one favorite composer, Tim particularly enjoyed playing the music of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and Messiaen. He cited his father as one of his biggest musical influences. "He taught me how to read music and gave me a solid foundation for a good technique. Ruth Laredo showed me that practicing the poetry of the music is more important than only practicing the right notes! And seeing great artists and experiencing all the culture that New York has to offer has certainly left an imprint on me as well." In his free time Tim enjoyed practicing, cooking, and eating, "particularly great sushi!" "During the last 57 years, New York City has moved through so many chapters of triumph, sorrow, and uncertainty, but Bloomingdale has been here through it all as a pillar for music, learning, joy, and community," said Erika Atkins, Executive Director, Bloomingdale School of Music. "Music is not only a vital form of creative expression but a form of support and inspiration that brings us together every day. We are initiating "Brackeen in the boroughs," with a performance as part of "The Masters Series" at Soapbox Gallery in... Brooklyn!  The live arts world was hit particularly hard by the pandemic and smaller venues have felt the pain more than others. We've chosen to support and celebrate intimate, but open and airy venues such as Soapbox Gallery; where music and well-being are a priority.  We ask all those who can, please consider purchasing a priority seating ticket for $50 (first few rows).
