NYC restaurants forced to switch from trash bags to bins

WBGO News

New York City food establishments are now required to put garbage into containers with lids. The new city law went into effect today.

No more trash bags on the sidewalks for restaurants. They are now forced to have bins in one of many moves the city is making to try and reduce the rat population. Andrew Rigie who represents restaurant owners with the New York City Hospitality Alliance says that means a space problem for some eateries.

“Requiring all these small restaurants to put these big dirty garbage containers inside when they don’t have the space means they are going to have to try and put them in their food prep areas or right in front of their restaurant.”

Some restaurant owners say the bins are another added expense while others applaud the move as good step in the battle against rats. Businesses face fines for not complying.
