For the first time, New York City will be opening up the iconic Fifth Avenue to pedestrians to encourage holiday shopping at local businesses.
The city will transform Fifth Avenue into an open street for pedestrians for 11 blocks on three Sunday afternoons in December. Madelyn Wils is with the Fifth Avenue Association.
“I think it will have a positive impact not just the businesses but on the experience of Fifth Avenue because what happens is the sidewalks get so crowded that people are pushed into the street.”
Meanwhile, police will once again give pedestrians more room to maneuver by Rockefeller Center during the holidays by using moveable barriers to close streets in the area to traffic at times.
