There's going to be a new effort try and cut down on the number of e-bike battery related fires that have become a big problem in New York City.
A pilot program that will start in 2024 will allow a group of delivery workers to charge e-bikes in the public using battery-swapping networks and secure bike parking docks. Mayor Eric Adams says the goal is to bring e-bike charging outdoors.
"Far too many people, they bring their bikes indoors, keep their bike by the door. When the fire happens or explosion takes, place, you are blocking your egress."
E-bike batteries have caused a lot of fires over recent years in the city, some of them deadly.
