New York City officials are pleased with the way crime numbers are trending despite an increase in crime last year.

Year end stats show major crimes in the city were up 22 percent last year compared to 2021. There was a drop in homicides and 17 percent decline in shootings but there was a significant rise in assaults, robberies and car thefts. Chief James Essig is optimistic though because he says the crime numbers trended lower in the last few months.

"Every borough in regards to violence experienced significant double digit decreases for the quarter."

Mayor Eric Adams says he wants to meet with state lawmakers to discuss ways to address repeat offenders.
