New York State lawmakers will reportedly be called into special session as soon as Wednesday to discuss the pandemic related eviction moratorium that expires today in the state.

An estimated seven to eight hundred households in New York state are behind on rent, possibly facing eviction.

“About half of those have been unemployed or lost income. We know that an eviction is a cataclysmic event for a family.”

Jason Cone with the poverty fighting Robinhood foundation is calling on lawmakers to extend the eviction moratorium for several months. If that happens the Rent Stabilization Association plans on suing. Cone thinks lawmakers can also help out landlords by allowing them to challenge a tenant hardship declaration in court.
