Christian Sands' 'Embracing Dawn' featured on WBGO's New Day, New Play Sep 9-13

Christian Sands Embracing Dawn
C/O the Artist
Christian Sands Embracing Dawn

Pianist Christian Sands has always been about the grasp, the reach for something to create. By his own admission it sometimes requires facing dragons, having those 20 question sessions with oneself to search for answers. Embracing Dawn is such a recording. He said he almost did not want to write the album, an expression of personal loss, of heartbreak, of the process of healing, all things every listener can connect with if they’ve been honest about their own lives.

In finding answers here, the leader is joined by a string quartet, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, brother Ryan Sands on drums, guitarist Marvin Sewell, vibraphonist Warren Wolf and a gorgeous harmonica solo on the title track by Gregoire Maret.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
